Obituary

THE LATE MRS. ANTHONY lu BROWN The unexpected passing of Naomi Violet, wife of Air. A. L. Brown and eldest daughter of Air. and Airs. R. A. McFarland, of Aorangi, came as a great shock to the community. The deceased lady was 28 years of age and had spent practically all her life in this community and was known and loved by a largo circle of friends for her gentle maimer of speech and her many kindly actions. She received her primary education at the Taonui School passing from there to the Feilding Agricultural High School where she remained for two years, gaining much credit in the commercial course. At the age of .16 years she left to join her aunt, Airs. O. A. Spencer, of Seattle, U.S.A., -where she continued her studies at the Garfield High School graduating with distinguished honours to further continue her education at Wilson’. 1 ? Business College where she remained for twelve months, gaining two diplomas. Later returning to New Zealand, she entered the employ of the N.Z. Farmers’ Distributing Company where she remained until the time of her marriage to Air. A. L. Brown, eldest son of Air. and Mrs. L. J. P. Brown, Bedford Park, Chiswick, London, foutyears ago. She gained the affection of all her fellow employees by her gentle and unselfish character. On her return to New Zealand she joined the staff of teachers of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Sunday School, serving faithfully in that capacity until the time of her*marriage. During the years of her marriage she lent herself freely to various organisations in the community and was always a lover of good literature. She, with her husband, was an active member of the Feilding Community Centre. She also took a live interest in the Alakino Women’s Institute, serving for a term in the capacity as treasurer. She was also a member of the Ladies’ Loyal Orange Lodge, serving in various offices.

To the sorrowing husband and parents and members of the family go out the sympathy of a large circle of friends. Over 200 telegrams and letters were received and over 60 floral tributes were placed on the grave, included in them being one from the W.E.A., St.. Pauls’ Presbyterian Church, Taonui School Committee, Alakino Women’s Institute, L.L.O. Lodges No. 56 and 53, and Ivowhai Rebecca Lodge. To show their last respects to the deceased lady, a large assemblage gathered at St. Paul’s Church, the building being crowded to capacity where an impressive service was con? ducted by the Rev. A. L. Dixon prior to the cortege leaving for the cemetery. Over 50 cars followed the cortege to the graveside. The services opened with llie hymn, “O God of Bethel.’’ The ladies’of the Alakino Institute formed a guard of honour at the church and grave. The pall bearers were Messrs. W. Stevens (R.N.Z.A.F.), K. Sim (N.Z.E.F.), R. Hammond (N.Z.E.F.), W. Leighton, V. R. Lawrence, H. H. Ferguson, and A. C. Buist. The shadows God sends are few. The blue of heaven is larger than the cloud.
