Complimentary Presentation

LEADING AIRCRAFTMAN WHITELAW HONOURED A very pleasant function took place yesterday afternoon when Leading Aircraftman Alan 3Vhitelaw was entertained to afternoon tea as a farewell gesture prior to his leaving in the near future for service overseas. Present were the Mayor and Mayoress (3ir. and Mrs. 1L R. Johnston), 31 r. D. Keay, secretary of the Patriotic Society, 31r. J. M. Graham, county clerk, Mr. J. Charles and 3lr. F. Mackie, president and secretary respectively of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and 31rs. J. Charles. His Worship the 3layor congratulated the guest of honour and stated that, as a Woodville-born boy, he knew he would always carry out his tasks efficiently. lie wished him every success while overseas and expressed the hope that he would speedily return. The Mayor expressed regret that Leading Aircraftman Whitelaw was unable to be present at the public farewell last week, but hoped that opportunity would yet be offered the guest of honour of attending one of these functions. The 3layoress then made the customary Patriotic Society presentations, after which 3lr. F. Mackie, on behalf of the R.S.A., associated himself with the Mayor’s remarks and assured the guest of honour that his association would watch his interests both during his absence and also on his return. 3lr. Mackie then made the usual R.S.A. presentations. Mr. Graham also extended good wishes to the guest of honour, whose father, ho said, had always been one of his closest friends. Leading Aircraftman Whitelaw briefly replied, offering thanks for the gifts and stating that he would always endeavour to do his best and carry out his duties to the best of his ability.
