OVER 300 YEARS OLD It is not generally known that India has had a navy for more than 300 years. lii recent times it has been on active ser.vico, keeping watch on Eastern areas, maintaining the safety of the trade routes and ports in co-operation with the Royal Navy, x»articularly since war was tit dared. The history of the Indian Navy goes back to 1612 when the East India Com pany fleet was formed, consisting of a squadron of four ships. Though its main purposo was the defence of the trade of tho Company in the Indian seas, its ships .took part in campaigns from China to the Persian Gulf. Two officers of tho Indian Navy w ore among the first to wia the Victoria Cross. In 1934 tho Indian Marine was reorganised and placed under full naval discipline. From that date it has used, its present name of the Royal Indian Navy, ' and its ships have flown the White Ensign. On the outbreak of the present war the Royal Indian Navy consisted of five escort vessels, a patrol vessel, a survey ship, a depot ship for training purposes, and various smaller craft. Thei* 'base is at the naval dockyard in Bombay.
