Hastings Track Work
HORSES ENGAGED AT WANGANUI ; MEETING
Horses with engagements at the Wanganui meeting this week were the main centre of interest at Hastings on Saturday morning when the course proper was open for galloping. After tho recent rains the track was very heavy, especially down the back, a fact that was reflected in the times.
Lambourn (G. Stowe) and Aqueduct (H. C. Murray) covered six furlongs in J. 27, and the same time was takcu by Burra Sahib (B. 11. Morris) and Halley (J. Campbell). Silver Ball (T. Ivilgour) and Stolen Coat (L. Barnett) were doing it nicely at the end of six furlongs in J.27£.
Arabic (P. Atkins) and Lutanist (J. Forsyth) were sent over a mile, which they completed in even time, the last six furlongs occupying 1.32. At the end Arabic, suited by the going, was just beginning to draw away. Over five furlongs Vin d’Houneur (Stowe) and Alienate (Forsyth) were together at the finish in I.ll*. Callcardine (H. Lunn) took 1.12* for the same distance. Ex-Pupil (R. Marsh) and Condole (Lunn) both moved nicely to clock I.ll*.
A number of horses were content with four furlongs. Yogi (Morris) and Tashi Lama (J. Campbell) were going easily to record 56sec. Achilles Song and Myrna Lov clocked 55$socs, and Cyprine (A. G. Weaver) and Siegall (L. Barnett) took 55*secs.’ Vhe same distance was traversed by Crucible (W. L. Aitken) and Hugm'e (Murray) in 56*secs. Unaccompanied, Etla (S. Paramore) took 56Jsecs, and Roeon (Lunn) and Theatre) Kilgour) cut it out in so£sees. Ivatesbridge bowled nicely over half-a-mile but was not timed. Over three furlongs Dyne (Kilgour) and a Lackham mare in G. W. B. Greene’s stable (H. J. Callahan) took 41*secs. OFF TO MELBOURNE H. Griffith, who took three of Mr. F. C. Christie’s horses when he went down from Hawke’s Bay for the Grand National moeting, did not return home. He stayed at Riccarton till a day or two ago, when he left for Invercargill. From there, as soon as transport is available, he will tako his team to Melbourne, whfire the trio will do their spring racing. The only horse he raced at Riccarton was Prince Shad, a maiden three-year-old by Paper Money from _The others are two-year-olds. Silver Mask is a grey colt by Theio—Lady Artful, by Lord Quex from a daughter of imported Shrill. Pioneer is a bay colt, brother to the recent winner, Jolly Tiem, by Paper Money—Mudlark. The three horses are all fairly forward.—Press. “SOME” TRACK WORK Three days before he won the Belmont Stakes the American crack three-year-old Whirlaway was galloped a mile and a-quarter on a wet track. He covered the distance in 2.2 2-5 and ran the first half-mile in 46 4-ssec. This severe test apparently did not affect him.
