BY HON. MINISTER OF DEFENCE The Minister of Defence (Hon. F. Jones) stated recently that it had been decided to open the Scheme “B” recruiting for service in the Royal Navy to married men with not more than one child. “It will be recalled,” said Mr. Jones, “that under this scheme, men between tho ages of 20 and 30 having University Entrance Examination or equivalent can apply for entry in the first instance as oruinary seamen (hostilities only) for training in England, those suitable and recommended oeing considered for promotion to probationary temporary sub-lieu tenants, R.N.V.R. Those not selected,” continued the Minister, “arc required to serve tor tho remainder the war as lower deck ratings. The first selections of suitable candidates will be made,” said the Minister, “from tlu single men, followed by the marrieu men without children and finally ii there are sufficient vacancies left from the married men with one child. Appli cations cannot be considered from mar ried men with more than one child.” The Minister added that, as hau already been announced on a number o-* occasions, the most encouraging reports have been received from tho naval authorities in England on the high standard displayed by the New Zealanders who have joined the Royal Navy under this scheme.
