Women’s Division of The Farmers’ Union

FORMER PRESIDENT HONOURED On Thursday afternoon Loader’s Hall, Dannevirko, was the scene of a very representative gathering of members of the W.D.F.U., being occasion of a complimentary social tendered by the Southern Hawke’s Bay Provincial Executive to Mrs. C. F. Barker, who has retired from the office of provincial president, which she held from 1933 to 1941. Airs. J. AI. Graham, of ; Woodville, president, presided. Mr. J. C. Bolton and Mr. H. ‘S. Al. Quigley, president and secretary of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Provincial Executive of tho Farmers’ Union, conveyed their good wishes and apologised for their unavoidable absence. • Air. E. Gibbard, Mayor of Dannevirko, assured those present that the citizens of Dannevirke appreciated very (fully the fino work the Women’s Division was doing, and also the splendid war work which was being carried out throughout Southern Hawke’s Bay by tho various women’s organisations, and they in Dannevirke would be pleased to receive their continued co-operation. Airs. R. E. Johnston, Mayoress of Woodville, on behalf of the members of the Woodville branch, expressed cordial

appreciation of the wonderful service rendered by Airs. Barker during tho many years she had been president. Airs. Barker had every reason to be pleased with her work and had retired from office knowing that she had done her very best to further the interests of the Women’s Division. Airs. A. Wliibley, secretary, had been associated with Airs." Barker ever since the division was first formed many years ago, and could not pay her greater tribute than to say that, although they had been working together all those years, they had remained the greatest of friends. The provincial president said that Mrs. Barker had left her something to live up to, as she had been a wonderful president. On behalf of all branches she asked Airs. Barker to accept an amber necklet ns a slight token of appreciation- of her work during her period of office. Other speakors were Airs. A. AlcLeod, president of the Dannevirke branch, Mesdames V. Carlson (Alangahei), L. Feierabend (Umutaoroa) and E. Wardle (Alaharahara). Airs. Barker voiced her appreciation and was accorded musical honours. During the afternoon a capital musical programme, provided by mombers of the Woodville branch, was thoroughly enjoyed as also was a humorous playette staged by the Alaugatera Women’s Institute. Those who contributed to the programme were the Woodville Glee Singers, Mesdames W. Hanlon (songs), E. D. Orr (musical monologues), H. Hume and R. L. James (vocal duets), H. Hume (songs) and Aliss Moyra Alunro (a dance). The accompaniments were played by Alesdames R. R. Johnston and G. Seeker.
