Notes of the Day

The social committee of tho Poliangina Hall, which has £35 in hand, has decided to invest it in tho National War Loan.

A lino of £2 and costs was imposed on Ernest Charles Caskc, of Denbigh Street, Feilding, for operating a motorcycle with a defective silencer, by Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., at the Feilding Coure to-day. The passing of Mr. John Morrison, for many years a member of the council, was the subject of a tribute by Cr. A. Campbell (cliairman) at yesterday’s meeting of the Oroua County Council, when it was resolved to forward a letter of sympathy with his relatives.

An unusual case came before the Armed Forces Appeal Board at Feilding yesterday when an appeal was dismissed for want of prosecution. Robert Coburn Parker, farmer, of Feilding, was appealed for by his father, R. ii. Parker, and it was stated that the reservist was desirous of serving and anxious to enter camp. The appellant did not appear and the case, as stated, was dismissed for want of prosecution.

In connection with the petition by certain ratepayers in the borough for exclusion from the borough, it was announced at yesterday’s meeting of the Oroua Coiunty Council that a commission comprising a magistrate, the Commissioner of Crown Lands and the District Government Valuer, would sit to decide tho petition. Both the Feilding Borough Council and the Oroua County Council have lodged objections to the petition.

“I am satisfied that some alteration will have to be made in the incidence of hospital rating, particularly in the case of the county ratepayer, otherwise he will shortly not be in the position of being able to pay,” said Cr. A. Campbell (chairman) at yesterday’s meeting of the Oroua County Council yesterday. He went on to say that to-day twothirds of the rates collected in the county went to pay the levy required for the maintenance of the Palmerston North Hospital.
