(From Our Own Correspondent, j Mr. and Mrs. Humphries, of Wairarapa, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wisneski, Lane Road. Mr. and Mrs. Smith snr., are staying with Mr. and Mrs. Graham Smith, Makerua Road. Miss D. Meech and Mr. A. Mcech, of Wellington, are spending the week-end at their home in Opiki. Sympathy of the district will go out ,to Mr. L. J. Viles in the loss of his brother at Te Puke. Mr. and Mrs. C. Olsen, Wangehu, who recently spent a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. A. Olsen, have returned home. Miss Ruth Petersen, of Kouwhatu, has returned home after a short holiday with Mr. and Mrs. O. Christensen. The Opiki Women’s Institute is packing local soldiers’ parcels at their August meeting. The Opiki Women’s Institute held a meeting on Wednesday afternoon. Miss L. Cooksley presided over a full attendance. The competitions were arranged [for the next six months as follows: — September, sponge sandwich, something 'new from something old; October,cream puffs; November, light fruit cake, eotjton frock; December, plain toffee, Christmas novelty; February, short bread, felt novelty; March, ginger ! bread and baby’s knitted vest. It was (suggested that the sponge sandwiches be sold for soldiers ’ fund and the baby’s vest be given to the Lady Galway Guild. A letter is to be written to the Manawatu Federation of Women’s Institutes regarding petrol to enable members to attend Red Cross classes in country districts. The secretary was instructed to write an appreciation to Miss Barrie for her services in coaching the physical drill squad for the group rally at Koputoroa. It was decided that it would be more convenient to hold the December meeting in the evening and it was decided to cpmbine the meeting with the children ’s party. Demonstrations in first aid, home nursing, and felt work etc., are |to be arranged. Hostesses for the next six months will be:—September, Mes | dames Wilde, Wilson, Young, and Gos ling; October, Mesdames Aitchison, Alve, V. Claridge and Nott; November, j Mesdames Irwin, Robinson, Misses Wilson and Sanes; December, Mesdames i Cooksley, Gregory, Horn, Henderson, and Miss Miers; February, Mesdames Larsen, Jackson, Olsen, and Miss Jackson; March, committee. Sympathy of the district is extended to Mrs. Miers and family in the recent sad loss of her mother, the late Mrs. Lews.
