Apiti

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Supporters of the Apiti Company attended the dance at Utuwai on Wednesday evening to assist the local Home Guard funds. On the same evening a car load of Home Guard members accepted the invitation of Kimbolton Company to attend a lecture on signalling by Mr. H. Duthie and a lecture on the Bren Gun by Sergt.-Major Stewart. They found both lectures to be most interesting and instructive. The Apiti District High School Committee met on Wednesday evening. The materials for the construction of the swimming pool have arrived from Wanganui. There was considerable discussion about the baths and the committee decided to start the work early in October. The social committee of the R.S.A. met recently at the home of Mr. J. JR. Stewart and arranged a social evening to be held on Friday, August 29. Particulars will be advertised. The Apiti Young Farmers' Club dance advertised for Thursday evening, is being eagerly anticipated by the young people of the district who are assured of a jolly evening. D.H.S. Speech Contest The third annual speech contest by the pupils of the secondary department of the Apiti District High School was held on Friday evening when a large gathering of parents and friends were entertaiined with a programme of excellent speeches, a play and musical items. Miss Annie Bensemann, the senior girl, made a capable chairman, who, prior to the commencement of the programme, asked all present to stand iu silence to the dear memory of the late Mrs. S. F. Morris. Rev. A. W. Baxter was tho adjudicator. In the restricted class the following were the speakers:—Betty Muir (“Captain Scott”)} Ruth Nix (“Livingstone”); Arthur McNicol (“Lord Nelson”); Mary Mclntyre (“Florence Nightingale”). Open classes: —Colin Watkins (“R. L. Stevenson”); Audrey Le Quesne (“Colonel Gorgas”); Muriel Prujean (“M. J. Savage”). Mr. Baxter congratulated al the speakers. Ruth Nix was easily tho winner in the restricted class. In the open class only four points separated tho three competitors, and Muriel Prujean. was awarded first place. Betty Muir, on behalf of the losers, congratulated the winners and thanked Mr. Baxter. Muriel Prujean expressed the thanks of the winners. A one-act play was well acted by Audrey Le Quesne and her brother Stanley in the serious roles, while Muriel Prujean and Kenneth Cowan provided the lighter touches. The programme concluded with a group of songs by the girls. Mr. J. H. Cowan thanked tho pupils for their entertainment and congratulated the teacher, Mr. J. R. Osborne, and Mrs. Osborne also for producing the play and training tho girls for singing. After supper there was a short dance, an orchestra of local men, Messrs D. Malone (violin), T. K. McLean (banjo), R. Muir (mandolin), D. McNicol (cornet), E. Josephs (guitar), providing the music. St. John Ambulance

Mr. G. Watkins presided at a well attended gathering on Saturday afternoon, when a St. John Ambulance First Aid Division was formed, some 12 men joining. Mrs. C. M. Stanley presented the women’s institute gift of a stretcher, a thermometer and bandages for use by the Apiti St. John Ambulance First Aid Division and the E.P.S. Nursing Division, and expressed the hope that the gift would be of real benefit in the district. In accepting the gift Mr. Watkins asked Mrs. Stanley to convey thanks to the women’s institute for their gift which was greatly appreciated- A letter is to be sent to Mr. Hausmann, thanking him for arranging tho gift which Miss Hausmann kindly brought out to Apiti. Regret was expressed that indisposition prevented Mr. Hausmann being present and all wished him a speedy recovery. Tho first aid box and stretcher is to be kept in the vestry of the Presbyterian Church. Mesdames H. C. Mclntyre and N. J. Viles have each donated a blanket for the stretcher. Mrs. Payton and members of the nursing class served afternoon tea. A cake stall supplied by the young members was the centre of brisk business, the funds being for the purpose of travelling expenses for the class. Personal Miss Doris Prince has returned home from Patea. Mr. and Mrs. F. Munro have been on a short visit to Masterton. Stoker Rees Watkins, of H.M.S. Achilles, is on leave and visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. Watkins. Mr. R. Hooper has returned from Wei lington where he attended the funeral of his brother who passed away lasi week. Mr. Hooper’s friends extend their sympathy in his sudden bereavement. Golf The local golf season concludes next Saturday. In the men’s championship W. Duncan beat Whit Pratt 7 and 6 in the semi-final. The final between D. C. Buckman and W. Duncan was a closely contested game won by the latter 2 anti 1. Duncan will hold the cup for the second time as he won the championship three years ago. J. R. Stewart 30 and Alec. McKenzie 28 fought out the final for tho handicap competition, the game being won by the former at the 20th.
