Greece Gripped by Famine
NAZI DEPREDATIONS LONDON, Aug. 11. With Its harvest destroyed by wand its food reserves pillaged by the Invaders, Greece is gripped by famine, says the Lisbon correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. j Travellers report that the bread ration is less than one-sixth of the normal consumption. Meat is unobtainable in Athens except when ordered by a doctor or bought at fantastic prices in the “black market.” Potatoes, when they appear, are ten times more costly than in normal times. Fruit and vegetables are three times dearer, thougn the season is at its height. Tobacco has been rationed at a tenth of the normal amount since the German depredations. The shortages, says the correspondent, have been intensified by the fact that transport is virtually at a standstill. The railways are almost without coal, and sections of the lines cannot be used owing to the destruction caused during the invasion. The electricity supply is expected to be cut off within three months, bringing trams to a standstill and plunging Athens into darkness. Because so many of them are attacked when alone, Italian soldiers in the country districts move in groups.
