Manawatu Women’s Patriotic Committee
The executive of tho Manawatu Women’s Patriotic Committee, with the Mayoress, Mrs. A. E. Mansford, in the I chair, met on Thursday afternoon to review the activities of tho subcommittees during tho past month. The financial report showed that an amount of £4,506 2s 2d had been raised by the committee to date, aud from the funds still in hand a further donation of £3OO was made to the fund for soldiers’ comforts and rehabilitation. Tho Patriotic -Shop Committee.—-Mrs. Barnett (convenor) reported that several new organisations had offered their services in running the Patriotic Shop during recent weens. Thanks to those who had so willingly assisted, both with gifts and with services, the total sum raised through the shop now amounted to £3,551 17s 2d.
The Parcels Branch.—Mrs. S. G. Northey (convenor) reported that a number of new members had joined the committee. Seventy-two parcels had been packed for organisations in the city during the month. The committee was commencing work immediately on the packing of the Christmas gift parcels, and donations of biscuits, to be left at the Patriotic Shop, for inclusion in the parcels would be most acceptable. At the last meeting of this committee appreciation was recorded of the services of the late Mrs. Bierre, who had been a valued member of the committee.
Tlie Knitting and Hussifs Branch.— Mrs. K. S. Manning (convenor) reported that the committee had ready for despatch to Wellington the following articles: —51 scarves, 7 pairs mittens, (55 balaclavas, and had handed to soldiers and airmen on final leave 4 scarves, 4 balaclavas, 5 pairs mittens and 2 pairs sox. The finishing-off of the footless sox was almost completed and tho committee’s thanks were due to all those who had come forward to assist in this work. The committee has a large quantity of khaki wool on hand and again asks for knitters to come forward.
The A.N.A. Club.—Mrs. N. V. Ballinger reported that their Excellencies, Sir Cyril and Lady Newall, had visited the clubroom and had expressed their admiration of the facilities provided. The committee had decided to continue with the weekly Saturday night dances and to organise a girls' dance auxiliary. The arrangements for the entertainment of the boys would be made in future for Saturday aud Sunday evenings. The work of the canteen committee had continued satisfactorily during the month.
