MENZIES’ REPLY TO JAPANESE INTERVIEWER Received Thursday, 1.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, Aug. 6. . Questioned to-day by a representative of the Japaneso newspaper Asahi Shimbun as to whether he personally could do anything to ears the situation in the Far East, Mr. Menzies replied: 44 1 wish I could. After all no action by Austra•ia or any other British country has produced the recent tension. We did not move into Indo-China.” The Minister of the Navy (Mr. W. M. Hughes) expressed pleasure that two United States warships had 4 4 dropped in on us while passing this way. 1 am quite sure their visit will not escape the notice of our friends farther north.” j Mr. Hughes said the warships were i certainly unexpected and hinted that [others might be about. ‘‘We shall in I every way possible show how welcome they are.” A report from Brisbane to-night states that the officers and sailors of the warships are receiving a wonderful welcome.
