Women’s Institute

AUGUST MEETNG The August meeting of the Women’s Institute held on Tuesday was exceptionally well attended. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs. E. J. Harding (secretary) while Mrs. Burnett (president) read items of interest in connection with the forthcoming conference, to which Mrs. Coulter has been chosen as delegate. Mrs. H. P. Horne gave members some information regarding Plunket Society requirements in conjunction with the E.P.S. The attention of members -was drawn by Mrs. Burnett to two beautiful silver cups which were on display, both of which are held by Woodville for the next 12 months, being the points prize ■and the Drama Cup which were competed for at the drama festival held at Eketahuna recently.

The institute birthday party is to take the form of an afternoon function and will be held on August 16. Being Members’ Day, the one meeting of the year when the president has a holiday — Mrs. Burnett vacated the chair and Mrs. Bibby, who had been elected to the honour, took her place. The first item of a very interesting programme was given by the drama circle—the winning play which they had performed at Eketahuna. Those taking part were Mesdames W. Galbraith, Nicholson, Thomasen, Orr, McCarthy and Miss L. Whiteman. The Alee Club next delighted the members with “ Sleep, Kentucky Babe.” Mrs. Hanlon was heartily applauded for her rendering of “I’ll Walk Beside You,” and responded to an encore with “Mighty Like a Rose.” A particularly well-rendered vocal trio by Mesdames Jones (sen.), McCormick and McNeil was most enjoyable. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Whiteman, K. Vogt, Arlidge, Ilartridge and Miss Aitcheson. The stall was conducted by Mesdames Berkahu and Bonny. Prizes were: Beat flower, Miss. Milner and Mrs. Seed; sultana cake, Mrs. Hurley, Mrs. T. Court and Mrs. Berkahn.
