Manawatu Federation of Women’s Institutes

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE Mrs. T. D. Lynch (Linton) presided over a meeting of tho executive committee of the Manawatu Federation of Women ’s Institutes held yesterday, also present being Mesdames T. E. Collins (hon. sec.), 11. V. Cavenhill and W. Churchill (Rougotea), D. b'cott (Aokautere), T. Rowlands (Tiakitahuna), W. M. McClelland (Kairanga), A. Poauganga (Rangiotu; and xuisd M. Grant. Prior to entering upon the business of the meeting sympathetic reference was made by tne president, to the bereavement suffered by the secretary in the passing of her mother, also to the passing ox Mrs. R. R. Bcott, founda- , tion member, of Aokautere Institute, the members standing in silence as a mark of respect. Sympathy was also expressed with Mrs. 11. N. MeEwen, from whom there was an apology in the serious illness of her sister, Mrs. R. L. C. Aitenison, and pleasure was. expressed that the sufferer was now making satisfactory progress. ' I in response to a request from Oroua (Federation it was decided to-undertake \ distribution of tne calendar, Mrs. McClelland to be in charge. | Oroua Federation notified tho holding of a drama competition in October and • invited entries from Manawatu. An invitation was received from the Manawatu branch of the N.Z. Co-op. Women’s Guild to attend a celebration' meeting next week.—Members who could attend were asked to be present. 1 The preliminary agenda for the Dominion Representative Council meeting in September was before the meet- j ing, Mrs. Lynch being federation repre- ’ seutativc. Miss K. Stocker, Drama Tudor for Adult Education, wroto about tho possibilities of holding classes of instruction in the Manawatu.—lt was resolved to suggest March-Arnil of next year as the best time. * Reports of Institute activities for the war effort were presented and disclosed that ail were busy doing their part. Mrs. Cavenhill presented the financial statement the following contributions being acknowledged:— Affiliation Fees: Tiakitaliuna 255, Tiritca 15s, Donation: Tiakitaliuna 10s Dominion Federation. Tentative arrangements were made for the half-yearly council meeting to be held at Aokautere, it being decided to ask Miss Nancy Groenwell, general secretary of the Palmerston North Y.W.0.A., to be the speaker. Mrs. Scott reported progress with regard to the floral festival to be held tho last week in November and the schedule was considered, Mesdames Scott, Lynch and McClelland being appointed a sub-committee to finalise details. The case of a needy family was considered and it was resolvea to gather warm clothing etc. for immediate distribution.

APITI Mrs. C. M. Stanley presided at the August meeting and all present stood in silent sympathy with the relatives of tho late Mr. T. 11. Purnell, of Martin Block. Letters of thanks were received from Mrs. M. E. A. Martin, who is still in hospital and from Mr. S. F. Morris, Wavcrlev. The W.I. gift of stretcher, thermometer and bandages to the Apiti St. John Ambulauco class for use in this district is to bo officially presented at Saturday’s First Aid class. Mesdames Payton and N. Yiles were thanked by the president for their services in tho arrangement of tho gift. Mrs. R. V. Stewart suggested a recipe exchange at 3d per recipe W.I. funds and members immediately made contributions to the recipe fund. Mrs. R. Jacob has offered to mako thrift quilts for war purposes and members are asked to give any spare pieces of cotton or woollen materials for this work. Home and Country subscriptions are to be renewed for our institute friends in England and Scotland. An interesting letter from “Strathkinnis ” W.K.1., something of life and work of our Scottish sisters in war days. Discussion on the soldiers’ parcel groups revealed that members and friends are anxious that this district should send forward as many parcels j as possible and. each group is urged to j send forward two parcels for our men overseas. Mrs. »Stanle3 r thanked members for their generous support of the Federation mystery parcel effort. Mem- ■ bers both gave and bought tho mystery parcels, which were distributed to I those unable to be in Feilding last Friday. Chocolates, cigarettes, frying pans, mops, soaps, etc., were distributed. Mrs. P. ,Simpson, of Mount Biggs, is to be present at our birthday meeting, and some interesting demonstrations will be given. The competitions are 21bs fruit cake, something new from something old and vase of spring flowers. The High School girls will have a stall for Christmas novelties and the profits from their efforts will be for Patriotic purposes. An enjoyable social programme was provided bv Mrs. F. Munro (song), Mrs. J. R. Osborne and junior members (three-part charade), piano-accordioif tune competition by Miss Mclntyre and a community sing with Mrs. W. Duncan at tho piano. Mrs. J. O’llagan sent a social competition which was won by Mrs. M. Jacob. A competition for coat hangers covered by High School girls was judged by Mrs. IT. Schmidt: Stella Harland 1, Annie Bensemann 2 (prizes i presented by Mesdames Stanley and Osborne); celophane belts, Miss C. Payton and Miss J.
