NORTHERN SPORT Regret at the death of Mr. R. H. Stallard and Mrs. D. MacPherson is expressed by the president of the Northern Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Cluub (Mr. K. McDonald) in his report to be presented to members at the annual meeting. “Mr. Stallard was president some years ago aud a particularly keen i bowler,” the report adds. “To Mrs. Stallard and her son, Harold, and to Mr. Duncan MacPherson we extend our sympathy in their .bereavements. I “it is only natural that the war now I raging should make some difference to the club,” the report proceeds. “ Our . young male members of the tennis sec- ! tion have enlisted for active service and many of the young lady members are engaged in some war effort. The membership of the tennis section is particularly low at present, and 12 playing areas are not now necessary. Six courts have been temporarily closed down meantime. The bowling section shows a wonderfully good increase in membership and the bowlers have made very useful donations of cash for various efforts and assisted in . many ways in the maintenance of the grounds. The croquet section has held its own during the year. The thanks of the club are tendered to all the officers, the bowlers who worked on the property, the green supervisor and every member who helped the club in any way. To Mr. Charles Anderson the club extends its very warm thanks for his work in bringing the two bowling greens into good order. The bowlers recettly made a presentation of a travelling bag to show in a tangible way that they appreciated his work. Mr. R. McMurray also assisted materially and a presentation was made to him. There were other helpers who have for years assisted whenever called upon and the club is deeply grateful tc them all. The financial position will have to be watched. With the falling off in revenue from the tennis section, the bowling and croquet sections may be called upon to increase their revenue. There should not be any great outlay during the coming season as the club’s equipment is now all in good order. The committee found it necessary to spend a sum much above the average on the bowling greens, croquet lawns and tennis courts, and are confident all three playing areas will be in first-class order for the coming season. With careful management the club should be able to live within its income this | year.” Mr. G. H. Lynch has resigned as greenkeeper after 10 years’ good service. Mr. A. H. Ihle served for a time 1 till he resigned and Mr. Andrew Hunter took up the duties on February 1. There was already evidence of his capability ,to fill the position. The president exI presses appreciation of the honour con- ' f erred on him at the last annual meeting when he was elected to office.
