Ownership of Bastion Point Disputed

MAORIS PETITION PARLIAMENT Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 30. The ownership of Bastion Point, Auckland, the burial place of New Zealand’s first Labour Prime Minister, was questioned in a petition and presented to the House to-day by Hon. P. hL. Paikea on behalf of Ngapipi Rewili, of Auckland, and thirty others. The petition set out that Bastioa Point had been given by the Maoris in 1559 to Queen Victoria or her heirs for defence purposes only and if the Crown ceased to require the land for this purI pose it would revert to its original owners. Petitioners asked that the condition! of the deed of gift be adhered to and •the Native Land Court be empowered to investigate the question and make the necessary orders in favour of the descendants of the original owners.
