Syrian Armistice Will End Nazi Drug Traffic
(British Official Wireless') RUGBY, ,j uiy 9. Mr. Churchill’s statement in the House of Commons regarding the Syrian armistice discussions lias a direct bearing on one of Germany’s more subtle activities —the smuggling of cocaino and hashish into Egypt and Palestine, for the purpose of undermining the health and morale of the local inhabitants. It is well known in informed quarters in London that this traffic, which, incidentally, provides' Germany with precious foreign exchange, has been conducted by the German armistice delegation in Syria. The traffic is operated by gangs in fishing motorboats plying between Haifa, Sidon, and Gaza. These gangs bring in as much as one kilo a week, cocaine predominating, and one kilo of cpcaine is worth many hundreds 1 of pounds sterling. The procedure is that cocaine, which is very largely produced in Peru, is carried to Europe, by Lati—an Italian air service operating between Brazil and Rome —and is then dispersed all over the Continent. This German trick will suffer abrupt cessation with the armistice in Syria.
