France Not Slid Out, Declares Petain
NO MENTION OF SYRIA LONDON, June 17. “You have been neither abandoned nor betrayed,” Marshal Petain told the French people in a broadcast from Vichy on the first anniversary of fiis taking-
over of power from M. Rcynaud. “This is no tiino to take refuge in bitterness,” he added. “Neither should you sink to despair. Those who tell you that are throwing you into the arms of Communism. “You are suffering and will suffer for a long time, because you have not finished paying for your past mistakes. Rally to me and yo,u will come safely out of the darkness into which your terrible adventure has plunged you. “I need your faith, wisdom and patience. Pull yourselves together and go with me in confidence. Thus we will emerge from the night and march together to a new future.” Marshal Petain did u.ot mention Syria.
