Gentleman Rider s Appeal Allowed
CHRISTCHURCH, June 17.
Tho Canterbury District Committee to-day heard an appeal by Mr. 11. G. Paul against the decision of the South Canterbury Jockey Club in disqualifying his horse, the winner of the Duke of Gloucester Cup, decided at Wasktiyko on May # 15, on tho grounds that Paul, who rode the horse, did not hold a gentleman rider’s certificate. After hearing Mr. C. W. Webber, who appeared as counsel for Paul, and Mr. C. L. Orbell, who appeared on behalf of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, the committee decided to allow tho appeal and in doing so held tho opinion that Paul’s gentleman rider’s f certificate was granted to him by the Racing Conference on April IS last. Tho decision |means that the winning stake for the Cup, amounting to £lO5, will now be payable to Paul and the cup and miniature received by him, but which ho ha<l to hand back when the horse was disqualified, will be returned to him.
