War May Leap Oceans To Engulf America
Received Thursday, 9.20 p.m. NEW YORK. May 20. The Under-Secretary for War (Mr. Patterson) told the Underwriters’ dinner: “The war is spreading and is ready to leap the oceans and engulf America. We cannot permit our defence preparations to be hindered by anyone. ’ * Mr. La Guardia (Mayor of New York), in his first speech as Director of Civilian Defences, appealed to those disagreeing with President Roosevelt’s policy to do and say nothing which would give comfort to a potential enemy, as everything Americans said was immediately cabled to Germany. The Maritime Commission has acquired the liner America, tlie largest passenger vessel built in the United States. The Commission said a number of merchant vessels were being acquired as navy auxiliaries.
The Executive Council of tbo Federation of Labour has announced agreement with President Roosevelt’s proclamation of unlimited emergency and has asked members to serve the nation by abstaining from strikes until all methods of conciliation and mediation have been exhausted.
The Berlin radio, commenting on President Roosevelt’s speech, says: “It is not Germany which wants world domination. It is America and its politicians, also the Jewish capitalists and cranks who are menacing the world. We have no quarrel with the United States, but if they start we are ready to meet all newcomers. President Roosevelt is trying to cram the war down the throats of the American people.”
