Apiti

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A combined social evening was attended by 50 members of the Methodist and Presbyterian Bible Classes. TJtuwai and Umutoi classes were well represented. Methodist classes arranged the programme. Competition winners were* Mr. W. .T. Jensen and Mr. J. It. Osborne. The Presbyterian classes provided supper. Mrs. F. Munro presided at a meeting of the Apiti Plunket Committee. The Feilding Committee have purchased a car for the nurse and members discussed the matter of sending a donation to the fund. It was decided that individual members make contributions and these will be forwarded as it is not possible to arrange a function at present. Mrs. E. Schmidt was thanked for a gift of a baby's quilt and this will be a competition prize later on for sub-branch funds. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Cowan were happy to learn that their three sons, Kenneth, Hugh and David, overseas with the N.Z. Forces are safe and well. Mr. and Mrs. John Jensen are holidaying at Paraparaumu. Mrs. AT. E. A. Martin is on annual leave, and Mr. J. Garrick is the relieving Post Master. All returned men and men of the services on final leave will be cordially welcomed at the Apiti E.S.A. Reunion on Friday evening. Mr. J. D. Kilgour presided over a small attendance at the annual meeting of tho Apiti Branch of the Farmers’ Union. The annual report was presented and tho local branch activities, although somewhat curtailed owing to benzine restrictions, have continued to lie well supported by members. The root crop competitions were most successful. The balance sheet disclosed a satisfactory position. Prior to vacating the chair, Mr. Kilgour thanked members for their support throughout the year. Mr. Kilgour was re-elected as president and thanked for his services, which have been recognised by Provincial Executive as Mr. Kilgour has been appointed a delegate to Dominion Conference. The retiring secretary, Mr. A. W. Viles, was also thanked for the capable manner in which he has carried out his duties for some years, vice-presidents, Messrs. H. C. McIntyre, 11. Davies, JL/. A. Martin, A. W. Viles; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. H. Jensen; auditor, Mr. G. A. McLeod; delegates to attend Provincial Conference in Palmerston North, Messrs. 11. C. Mclntyre antr H. H. Jensen. The executive committee was re-elected. There was a general discussion of the remits for conference and on other matters of interest. Farewell Party On Thursday evening Mr. W. J. Viles entertained some 60 friends at a happy party for his son, Sergeant-Pilot 11. G. Viles (“Snoyy”) at present on leave. Mrs. J. B. Stralian, assisted by her father and Mesdames C. F. Viles and N. J. Viles, also helped to entertain. Dancing and cards passed the time pleasantly, and songs were given by Messrs. O. Watkins, W. Duncan and E. Clifton. Messrs. Wright, T. K. McLean and E. Muir played for dancing and for a community sing. Mr. W. J. Osborne proposed a toast to “Snowy” who is the first Apiti boy to train as a pilot and congratulated him on liis engagement to Miss May* Harkness and wished him good luck and a safe return to his home after tho war. Mr. W. Duncan then proposed a toast to Mr. W. J. Viles, a highly esteemed resident of the district for over 30 years, who has taken part in many activities for the

good of the district and who has set his sons an excellent example to follow. Much interest was shown in the siver cup, the trophy for the New Zealand Federation of ' Young Farmers’ Clubs debating contest, which was won last rear by the Apiti A team and which had only that clay arrived in Apiti. Mr. W. McKay presented the cup to the winners, Messrs. H. G. Viles, and A. Cowan, and extended congratulations to them and to Mr. ,T. E. Osborne, their coach. It was fitting that the trophy should have been presented on such an occasion as it was Mr. Viles, Snr., who hail encouraged the debating contests among the Y.F. Clubs, by presenting a shield for competition. Messrs. H. G. Viles, A. Cowan and J. R. Osborne each replied. Personal Mrs. S. White has been staying with Mrs. J. R. Osborne and returned to Patea at the end of last week. Mr. Martin Nesdale, of Umutoi, formerly on the staff of the Apiti Post Office has been transferred to Palmerston North. Mrs. T. K. McLean and family have been holidaying at Te Arakura. Mrs. E. Clifton is staying in Palmerston North. Members of the Apiti Home Guard were favoured with a fine day for their field manoeuvres on Saturday. The E.P.S. Committee are busy canvassing the district for promises to help and accommodation should any emergency arise. Next Saturday a. lecture on First Aid is to be given and “all interested are invited to attend. W.I. Dance The Wojnen’s Institute annual dance on Friday evening was attended by dancers from many miles distant and all agreed that they had spent a very enjoyable evening dancing to music by a Feilding orchestra. Extras were supplied by several soldier visitors and one gave a tap dance. Mrs. V. AT. Stanley welcomed Sergeant-Major R. Stewart, and members of the fltli Wellington Mounted Rifle?* and other men of the services present. She expressed thanks to all who had assisted in making the function such a social and financial success. Prizes for novelty .dances were won. by Miss Haycock (Kimbolton) and Mr. F. Munro. (Gay Gordons'). Miss M. Russell and partner (hiekv spot schottische), iMiss Merle Muir'and Mr. E. Galyer (Monte Carlo). Mr. C. M. Stanley, was the M.C. Supper was provided by the W.l.■'members and served by the comI mil tee and helpers. The. Apiti Piesbvtorjan Church on Sundsv morning was attended by a large congregation for the anniversary service conducted bv Ke.v. A. W. Ba.xt.cr, who mentioned the names of all the Home Missionaries who have been stationed in this district during the past 40 years. Pioneers who lived here and built tho church were also remembered and Rev. Baxter expressed pleasure that Mr. George Cowan, one of the original office bearers, is still an elder of the church.
