Several of theso were made up J on tho spot, and contained ono stick of ® gelignite, with small stones substituted \ for the usual nails, staples, etc., which f are used under service conditions. They ' were exploded in the quarry at a safe . distance from the spectators. Major Mewett spoke to the assembled guardsmen for several minutes on the possible future of tho Home Guard in New Zealand, and stressed the necessity for members of the Guard to make? themselves as efficient as possible in whatever branch of tho service they happen- ( ed to be. Horowhenua Rugby The president, Mr. A. Gillespie , (Shannon), occupied the chair at tho , weekly meeting of the Horowhenua , Rugby Union’s executive, when it was resolved to enter a challenge for the | Bebbington shield with tho Dannevirke Union. It was further decided to play two rounds for tho senior and junior championships, followed by a knock-out round, and two rounds only for the third grade competition. The Wanderers, United and Foxton Clubs were each lined for failing to provide team slips, as required for playing members in wrongly coloured jerseys. On behalf of the Referees’ Association, Mr. J. A. Zuppicich stated that it was the intention of the referees strictly to enforce the rule regarding the starting time of games. In future, if teams were not ready by the advertised time of commencement, the abandonment of the game would be ordered, or, if one team was on tho lield, it would be awarded the match. A complaint was read from the Air Force committee submitting j that studs on the boots worn by some players were causing injury and asking that appropriate action be taken to assure tnat studs were not too long or too sharp. The committee agreed to give tho complaint attention. A decision was made to compel all clubs using grounds in Levin to be responsible for supplying flags for the grounds on which they play. As games were postponed oh .Saturday last on account of the Foxton races, the committee decided not to meet this week. Congratulations were extended to Mr. R. Cochran on his election to the Foxton Borough Council. Miranui Ladies’ Guild. Tho Miranui Ladies* Guild met as usual at the residence of Mrs. <J. Guerin, Kingston Road, last Wednesday aiternoon, Mrs. L. H. Best presiding. A parcel of knitted Helmets, mittens and socks for the minesweepers was received from Mrs. R. J. Barber, Kaihinau Road, also a dress for a competition whicli augmented the guild's funds consaderaoiy. Mrs. W. R. Larsen, wflo is leaving tho district to reside in Tokomaru. Maureen Uoouwin presented the guest of honour witn a bouquet, and in maxing Mrs. Larsen a presentation of a crystal dish, tho president (Mrs. Best) referred to the wonderful work Mrs. Larsen had dono througnout tne past year. On .Saturday evening a large number of district residents as well as visitors from Dannevirke, Feilding, Faimerstou North and Fahiatua were the guosts ox Mr. and Mrs. O. Larsen at their residence, Miranui. The evening was spent in dancing, community singing ami playing cards. Mr. K. Downes, speaking on behalf of Mr. L. H. Best, thanked Mr. and Mrs. Larsen for their hospitality and wished them all the best iu their new home. Mr. Larsen, who is leaving at the end of the week to farm his own property near Tokomaru, has been farm manager for Mr. Alt. Seifert; at Miranui for the past 14 years, and Mrs. Larsen has spent the greater part of her life in this district.
