St. Pat’s in the early stages, looked as il they would put it all over ’Varsity who were held on the defensive for a quarter of an hour or more. But it was a good defence although the blues had to force several times when hard pressod. From occasional counterattacks by both forwards and backs, the impression was gained that there were some speedy men in the side. Halfway through the spelf, the blues started to show more initiative, penetrating into the green half fairly oxten thougn by no means dangerously. Bad handling by ’Varsity let fc>t. Pat’s right up under the goal. The backs swung across field but ran into a solid wall of blue. Next they shot to the other side and Cuff was over. Edlin raised the flags. St. Pat’s s—o.

Shortly after the greens were awarded a handy penalty but Edlin missed. The second spell saw the greens again on tho offensive. When ’Varsity finally were able to launch an offensive they were helped -by a free kick but the ball went wide. St. Pat’s returned to the attack, being served well by the hookers in the scrums. Still, they found the defence solid. A penalty fell short and then ’Varsity launched a counter offenBive which was rapidly broken up. The greens swept down field with the backs handling magnificently. Edlin was in the vanguard of these movements, from one of which Mullins scored. Fitzpatrick’s kick failed miserably and the board read St. Pat’s B—o.

UNITED BEAT KIA TOA Twenty minutes went by with the play confined to the forwards before the stand saw the first piece of baekline work, Kia Toa staging the break in the monotony. It was not much of an effort but came as a pleasing interlude. Early in the spell Kia Toa were handed a penalty, a good effort by Wishnowski just missing. However, a second effort oy the same player when 25 minutes had gone, saw Kia Toa with three points up. A couple of minutes later Ward made an effort to even the score with a penalty, a long kick going very near. He tried again shortly after from a handier position but this time the leather went wide. Next it was Kia Toa’s turn again but the distance beat Wishnowsky. Early in the second spell United were given a gift penaiity in front of the posts but Hill missed. Ward took the uext considerably further out and missed also. United were showing a little determination and got encouragement from the crowd pleased to see some open play and the backs taking a bigger part in proceedings. Ward was cheered when at last he made a great job of work with a penalty kick from the side line. —Three all. Ward went off hurt and was replaced by Findlay. There came a bright moment for Kia Toa when Wishnowsky broke away and transferred to Robinson who had to be chased. He was caught just in time and pushed out. United resumed the offensive, fielped by good hooking in the scrums, and then came a beautilui field goal by Mabey which put them in the lead. United 7—3. The whites were irresistible now, the backs chopping into Kia Toa’s defence in great style. Porter made an opening for Marsden to touch down with the blues hanging on to him. Mabey’s kick missed. United 10 —3. In a matter of minutes there came another try from a movement started by Findlay who sent Porter away and then Temperton who behind the posts. Mabey again made a bad job of the kick. United 13—3. United were attacking again when time was called. OLD BOYS BEAT FEILDING In the senior Rugby contest in Feilding on Saturday, played in fine weather, Palmerston North Old Boys secured the verdict over the eoinoined Feilding team by six points to nil. The teams were fairly evenly matched but the play lacked combination arid was characterised throughout with over much individualism. Tnere was no score when the interval came although the visitors secured a number of penalty kicks and those at goal were fruitless. Late in the second spell after the home sido had essayed a penalty goal or two, Old Boys secured three points from a nice kick by Ryan, the visitors’ full-back. Feilding continued to hold the territorial advantage but were unable to finish off some of the enterprising work of the backs, notably Dermer and Jarrett. As the end drew near the visitors kept play in Feilding’s territory and from a handy position Leggins registered another penalty kick to make the final score 6—o. The Feilding goalkicker, Pollard, failed in a couple of good attempts to equalise. Mr. Holdsworth controlled the game. REPS. Why smoke them, anyway, when you can get the genuine toasted for the same (or less) money? Toasting, the manufacturers’ complex and unique process, eliminates the poisonous nicotine, while at the same time enhancing flavour and aroma, and you not only get a thoroughly enjoyable smoke but a harmless one.
