Hockey in the Manawatu

FEILDING TEAM’S INAUSPICIOUS DEBUT A team from Feilding made an inauspicious debut in the Manawatu Hockey Association's senior competition on Saturday, being beaten by United by 18 goals to 1. In the other game on. the Hokowhitu Domain High School beat Phoenix by 7 goals to 1. * . The latter game was not as one-sided as the score suggested and it was only in the last quarter-hour that High School did the bulk of their scoring. Play in the first half was very even. Donaldson, Phoenix centre forward, opened the scoring. Kyle (High School) had bad luck in hitting an upright, but a little later put the ball in the not following a nice dasn down the wing by Waters. There was no further score in the first half and the second spell was half gone before there was any alteration, Nicholls finding the net twice in quick succession. Phoenix were tiring under relentless pressure and further goals were obtained by Mummery, Nichols, Wollerman and Waters. In the Phoenix team Johnson, centre half, was outstanding; had he not been on the ground there might have been a cricket score. The umpires were Messrs. J. li. McDonald and R. Hoare. Feilding were never in the hunt with United; they had some good players, but the'rest were hardly up to junior standard. Goals were scored for United by Nesbit (8), Smith (6), O’Sullivan (2), Olliver and Ilart, while Simeon netted for Feilding. Messrs. L. Martin and L. H. Rendle had charge of the game. In the junior competition High School B defaulted to Broadway and High School A beat Phoenix by 3 goals to 1. Persson (2) .and Coleman netted for School and Burgess for Phoenix. Women’s Competition In the women’s competition High School Old Girls (3.1 beat Feilding (1). Misses N. Spiers (2) and J. Beattie scored for the winners and Miss Y. Knight for Feilding). The umpires were Messrs. 11. Byers and Boyes. Broadway (3) beat United CO), Misses J. Hall and O. McKearnev doing the scoring.
