German Public Kept in Ignorance
MILITARY CIRCLES ADMIT DIFFICULTIES Received Sunday, 6 p.m. ZURICH, May 24. The Neuczuricher’s Berlin correspondent says that while the German public is still uninformed about the battle for Crete, military circles privately describe it as comparable only with battles of the last war. They say it far exceeds any battle of the present war in severit. The fighting in Greece and Yugoslavia were mere episodes compared with the resistance offered in Crete. Commenting on Tobruk, a German military spokesman said that the British garrison was offering considerably more resistance than was expected. “The artillery fire has reached the intensity of the battle of the Somme/’ he stated. “Our troops suffer from heat and lack of water, but it can bo assumed that the British suffer more as the reservoirs and pipes have been destroyed by Stukas. * 1 The lack of heavy nrtiilery is a setback to our operations as bombers are insufficient to replace guns.”
