News of Maori Troops

MESSAGE FROM PRIME MINISTER (From Our Own Correspondent.) HASTINGS, May 22. A few of the Maori soldiers wno took part in the Greok campaign have been returned to Egypt, others are in Crete and a number nave so far not been accounted for. Information to this effect received from the Prime Minister, Hon. P. Eraser, from Egypt has been passed on by the acting Prime Minister, Hon, \v. Nash, to the Bishop of Aotearoa, Rt. Rev. I'. A. Bennett. In a telephonic communication with Mr. Nash last night, Bishop Bennett was told that Mr. Eraser had reported that the way in which the evacuation had been carried out made it difficult to learn how all the New Zealanders had fared. The Maori units had been scattered, and it might bo somo time before they would be reunited. Regret was expressed by Mr. Eraser that he could not get further information" of the New Zealand forces, but he informed Mr. Nash that as soon as reliable word was received the news would be sent to New Zealand.

The deaths of two Alaori soldiers had been reported so far, but this could not be taken as an indication that casualties were light, said Bishop Bennett. It was known that the Maoris had seen fierce and heavy fighting in tho vicinity of Mount Olympus and some losses must be expected.
