Farmers’ Union

ANNUAL MEETING At the annual meeting of the executive of the 8.H.8. Farmers’ Union held in Dannevirke yesterday, the president, Mr. J. C. Bolton, presided over a fair attendance. Prior to commencing the business of the meeting, Mr. Bolton made sympathetic reference to the tragic death of Mr. G. J. .1. Buchanan, the vote being carried in the usual way. The president’s report and statement of accounts were presented and unanimously adopted. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. J. 0. The representatives of the Young Farmers’ Club, Chamber of Commerce and the S.H.B. Auctioneers’ Association were left to the respective bodies to appoint. General. Mr. F. Jackson, Porangahau, introduced the subject of the levy on bales of wool, and enquired whether the Government was still drawing this, aiul also as to whether the chairman of the Wool Publicity Council was still drawing his honorarium of £2OO per year.— It was decided to make further enquiries into this matter. As the Fields Instructor, Mr. Holden, has been transferred, it was decided to communicate with the Department requesting that a successor be appointed as soon as possible. Mr. Holden is to be thanked for his valuable services. The secretary, Mr. H. S. M. Quigley, reported having replied to a letter from the Wairoa Province expressing sympathy with fanners in the district who have suffered from tho recent tlobd. Regarding damaged fences, the president said that, although wire and labour were difficult to obtain, the union would do everything possible to assist in this matter. Dissatisfaction was expressed regarding the position of manure sacks, one member stating that after these had been used a few times they became damaged, resulting in companies refusing to purchase them back. It is hoped to revert to the old system of ‘ ‘sacks in.” Mr. H. Stratford raised the subject of degenerates on farms. He was of the opinion that the matter should receive immedjato attention, and moved that a remit be forwarded to the Dominion Executive. This was seconded by Mrs. Hidden. The remit read as follows: “That the Dominion Executive take definite action against mentally deficient persons being sent to country districts tot be taken care of, it being recognised that although it is done from a humanitarian effort to help those unfortunates, it is not in the interests of the country people, particularly those in isolated parts.” The president thanked the members for their support during the past year, and spoke appreciatively of tho cooperation he had always received from the secretary and his staff. The president was thanked for his valuable and lucid report, and for his untiring services throughout the year. Votes of thanks were also passed to Messrs. Thompson and Aldridge, who have travelled considerable distances to attend the meetings, Mr. W. T. Dean, secretary of the Woodville branch, ami the press. Following the luncheon adjournment, Mr. W. W. Mulholland, Dominion president, who, with Mr. A. P. O’Shea, Dominion secretary, was present, delivered a powerful and comprehensive address.
