FOXTON CANDIDATES GALLOP AT AWAPUNI HEAVY FROST HAMPERS THE STEEPLECHASERS With the Foxtou meeting at tho end. of the week and Wanganui next week it was expected that tncre wouid be plenty oi jumping at Awapuai yesterday. There was a very heavy irose, however, ana wnen inis had meited tho going loosed, much too snppeiy and notamg was sent over t-ie country. With the ’cliasei's out of it interest was centred in the horses which are to race at Levin. Last Acre (<J. A. Bowry), Pit»ark (11. P. Stewart) and Tau-uru (S. Aurora’s Star (W. J. Broughton) had Gaelic Song (G. R. Tattersali) as a companion over seven on the plough and she was going nicely at the linisii to record 1.35 2-5. Sweet Anne (Broughton) gave Elusary (Tattersali), Fly-by-Nigiit (Waddell) and Victoire (Stewart) a couple of lengths start and was with Elusary half a lengvn in front of the others at the end oi live run in 1.9. Brazil (F. Buchanan) was just in front of Aril (J. K. Searle) at the end of three in 40; Squeers (Brougnton) was on the bit during live which took 1.11; Riugless ran six, the last live in 1.10; Rangitikei (Searle) and Hokumai (Tattersali) ran live in 1.9 3-5; Desert Tide (Stewart) was not under pressure over four in 5(3 4-5; and Clarion Call (T. E. Wishart, Hastings, on Monday next at 8 p.m. NOT ENCOURAGING The effort of All Irish in the Waikato Steeplechase on Monday was not encouraging to those who fancied the prospects of the Illumination gelding in tho Great Northern (states the Star). The writer continued: He jumped as dashingly as ever, but under his steadier "of 12.11 he nev.er really looked like taking part in tho finish. In the Great Northern he has 71b. less to carry, but the journey is fully a mile further, and his prospects of winning this important event are not over bright at the moment. A. JENKINS AND KING KEY King Key, who won the President’s Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday, and is now one of the favourites for the Great Northern Hurdles, in which he has the handy weight of 10.3, is to bo ridden in his Ellerslie engagement by the versatile horseman, Ashley Jenkins.
