LABOUR’S CANDIDATE FOR MAYORALTY
Mr. C. B. Murphy, Labour’s candi date for the Mayoralty, is a well-knowj figure in Trade Union and Labou circles, and is perhaps the most capabl organiser and chairman in the move ment.
Mr. Murphy has lived in Palmerston North since early childhood, his- parents being farmers, and in his youth was connected for many years with the freezing industry. During this period he was for some time president of the Longburn branch of the Freezing Workers ’ Union, and was- also president of tho North Island Freezing Workers’ Association until his retirement from that industry some ten years ago, since when he has been successfully contracting on his own account.
During his long connection with industrial organisations he has held many official positions and is to-day president of the Wellington Area of the New Zealand Workers’ Union and president of the Manawatu Trades Council.
In political circles too, Mr. Murphy enjoys a similar measure of confidence, and after some years as vice-president was this year elected president of tho Palmerston North Labour Bepresentation Committee.
He is a member of the Manawatu Automobile Association Executive, serving on the general and administration committees of that body, and is a member also of the Ga Manpower Committee and a recently-appointed member of tho Primary Production Council for this district.
Always interested in amateur sport Mr. Murphy was president of the United Amateur Wrestling Club during the time that body was so successful in this- district.
He is popular with all sections of the community, and his executive ability, his sound judgment and his pleasing personality have gained him the respect and confidence of all with whom he has been associated.
