Nazis Demand to Land in Syria

DRIVE ON OILFIELDS LONDON, May 8 According to Swiss reports, Germany has demanded permission to land forces in Syria for drives on the Iraq and Iran (Persian) oilfields and on the Suez. The Germans have served demands on fhe Vichy Government’s High Commissioner in Syria, General Dentz. Germany is also reported to have threatened to land parachute troops on the Syrian coast and to have declared: “If the landings are resisted, Syria will be considered to have taken up arms against Germany.” IJnd&r a Vichy date-line, the New York newspapers recently reported that Russia was demanding the right to occupy the northern provinces of Iran (Persia) in order to protect the Baku oilfields and also to obtain a possible outlet to the Persian Gulf in the event of a German drive to the Dardanelles. Russia, it is stated, is concentrating troops at Tiflifl, and there is, in consequence, tension on the border of Russia and Iran.
