Union’s Anti-war Resolution
RESCISSION SOUGHT Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 8. Strong dissatisfaction with a recent resolution adopted by the Wellington Carpenters and Joiners’ Union, requesting the withdrawal of New Zealand from the war, has been expressed by a number of members of the union. A special general meeting will be held to-night, by requisition of 100 members, to consider a rffotion that the union rescind the resolution and that these responsible for it be removed from office. A circular issued to members on Tuesday states in substance: “The main purpose of the meeting is to consider and rescind the resolution which was adopted at a meeting of our union when only ten members were present, and to remove from office those responsible for it. This resolution, which had for its purpose a proposal to withdraw New Zealand from the war and leave our mates overseas and our kindred in Great Britain in the cold, has caused serious - reflections to be made on the ■Wellington carpenters and joiners generally. “For the past two or three weeks the carpenters on the various jobs have been greatly agitated and concerned about the aclion of this small number of men. We have decided to take steps in an effort to clear up the situation and to salvage the good name of our organisation. You can see by the requisition, which is signed by 100 members, that the resolution is already condemned in the eyes of the members Cl our organisation. “We want to warn you beforehand not to be side-tracked or confused by any irrelevant matters, but to go to the meeting determined that actual working carpenters shall form the policy and be responsible for the carrying out of the administration of our organisation. It is to this end and to assist you to be on your guard against such'confusion that this circular is issued to you.”
