500 Lost in Torpedoed Ship TOTAL FORCE WAS 16,000 United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Thursday, midnight SYDNEY, May 8. The commanding officer of the Australians in Greece (General Sir Thomas Blarney) has notified Mr. P. C. Spender (Army Minister) that the total Australian casualties in Greece, including killed, prisoners and missing, wilt probably not exceed 3000. Mr. Spender revealed that the number of Australians who went tp Greece was approximately 16,000. lie expressed the opinion that the 3000 casualties would include 500 lost when a ship evacuating the forces was torpedoed, “although,” he added, * 4 x cannot he positive about it.” This was the first disclosure about the latter incident. Mr. Spender added that scores of Australians would in due course receive military decorations as the result of the fighting in Greece.
