Foxton Harbour Board To Lose its Chairman

MR. LINKLATER NOT SEEKING RE-ELECTION After serving as chairman for 20 years, Mr. J. Linklater is severing his connection with the Foxton Harbour Board.' At the conclusion of the meeting, held in Palmerston North yesterday, Mr. Linklater took the opportunity of saying good-bye to his follow members and of thanking them for the loyal support they had always accorded him during his long term as chairman. He said that during his term of office the board had had to face many serious problems but that they had always managed to worry through. He added that i he was very sorry that circumstances had made it impossible for him to continue as a member and that it was with deep regret that he would sever his connection with the board. Mr. Linklater wished the Harbour Board every Success in the future and its members the best of health and every prosperity. Mr. J. A. Nash assured Mr. Linklater tha* ihe news that he did not intend to offer himself for re-election had been received by board members had been deep regret. He continued: “It has been our pleasure to work with you. To us you have extended the utmost courtesy and I can safely say that every man who has had thj privilege of working with you on the Foxton Harbour I Board has been your friend. You have I given up no end of time to further the interests of the board and although you have, as chairman, boen voted a sum of money, you have never collected a shilling of it. We have a lot to be grateful to you for and we do sincerely regret that you will not be with us next year. When the war is over and your sons are back we hope you will bo able to rejoin us on the board.’ * Air. Nash then referred to the fact that Air. W. E. Carthew would not be seeking re-election and he assured Air. Cartliew that his fellow-members had heard with regret of his intention to retire. He added that in Air. Carthew Feilding people had had a sound business man to represent them and Air. Nash wished Mr. Carthew and the chairman the best of health and prosperity in the future. Air. W. E. Barber said that Air. Linklater’s decision to retire had come as a shock and even at the last moment he could not realise that they were going to lose their chairman. Air. Barber endorsed all that Air. Nash had said and he wished Mr. Linklater the best of luck, good health and a long life. Air. Barber also paid tribute to the work of Air. Carthew. Paying his tribute to their chairman, Air. E. J. Bowater said ho hoped the ratepayers appreciated all that Air. Linklater had done as chairman of the board. He, too, wished Air. Linklater and Air. Carthew the best of luck in the future. Returning thanks and paying tribute to the work of their chairman, Air. Carthew expressed regret that circumstances over which he had no control had prevented him from seeking reelection. He added that he had always enjoyed the meetings of the Harbour Board and that he had found Air. Linklater one of the best chairmen he had over met in connection with local body affairs. He assured the meeting that liis association with the Harbour Board had been a real pleasure to him and he gave his assurance that the board would find that his successor would prove an easy man to get on with.
