Rhodesia’s Financial Help to Britain

(British Official Wireless.) Received Tuesday, 9.20 p.m. RUGBY, May 5. The Colonial Office announces, that the Government of Northern Rhodesia has expressed a desire to continue during 1941 its financial contributions to the war effort of the Empire and has offered accordingly to make a gift of over £296,000 to tue United Kingdom Exchequer. Of this sum £50,000 is to go towards the purchase of fighter aircraft. The people of Northern Rhodesia regard it as a privilege to afford the British Government all possible financial assistance towards the successful prosecution of the war and no less than £80,500 of their contribution is being derived from the proceeds of special war taxation. The territory is also financing from revenue various works the cost of which was formerly met from grants from the Colonial Development Fund and which would have amounted in 1941 to £32,000. The British Government gladly accepted these magnificent contributions in grateful recognition of the spirit of loyalty and sacrifice which has prompted this splendid assistance to the common war effort. Beginning this month, Northern, Rho-

desia is also putting savings certificates on sale, the proceeds to be re-lent to the United Kingdom to help in the war effort. By a resolution of the Legislative Guuncil i*t was recently decided to issue £50,000 worth of savings certificates to be on sale to the public on the same terms as those on sale in Britain. The British colony and Allied sympa thisera in Mexico have sent the Minister of Aircraft Production 20,000 dollars for a plane to be called Popocatepetl after the well-known Mexican mountain.
