Haile Selassie’s Entry Into Addis Ababa

BRITAIN’S HELP IN RECONSTRUCTION Received Tuesday, 9.20 p.m. RUGBY, May 5. The coming entry of Haile Selassie into Addis Ababa, which is being decorated and into which dignitaries are crowding, is arousing the deepest enthusiasm among tho local population. The Times devotes a leader to the emperor’s personality and his future tasks. It says: “One of the tragedies of the Italian invasion was that the conquerors systematically hunted down and exterminated those young Abyssinians who had received foreign training and upon whom Haile Selassie had largely relied for his work of civilisation and emancipation. This task must now be started over again. The emperor has already asked for foreign aid in the reconstruction of his country. He will rightly seek advisors who will enable Abyssinia to take part in the modern development of African economy without losing her independence.” “Politically and economically,” says the Times, “the assistance which Britain is able to render to the development of restored Abyssinia will serve as a touchstone of British policy in the future development of Colonial Africa. ”
