Meat Being Made Into Manure

STATEMENT AT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETING The statement that meat was being taken from cool stores at two freezing works and made into manure, was made by a member at Monday night’s meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce. The Alinister of Finance, he stated, had said that no meat would be destroyed or made into manure, yet the speaker had it on good authority that meat had been converted into manure. Admittedly, it was not of the' best quality and had been in store for some time, bu.t the cost of turning it into manure, he had been informed, waa more than the value of the final product. The chairman (Mr. K. A. Henderson): That seems a solution of the second-grade meat problem. It is against the Government’s socialistic principles that such things should be done, but they are apparently now realising that it is necessary. There was no further comment.
