Unrelaxed Vigilance

“It is well to remind motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and those in charge of motor-vehicles or horses, that vigilance on the roads must be maintained if jthe accident rato is to be reduced,” says the latest road-safety message of . tho Automobile Association (Manawatu) Inc. “Ensure beyond any doubt by the exercise of sound judgment and thoughtful behaviour that no act of yours contributes to tho discomfort, displeasure or harm of any other road user. The demonstration of goodwill on the roads is more practical than the goodwill of lip-scrvice. “Show tolerance toward all who use the roads; be extremely careful as motorists in relation to pedestrians, particularly tho aged aud tho children; eschew bravado and never take risks; obey the regulations and, better still, be guided by the dictates of sound common sense applied to circumstances as they arise. “If you arc a pedestrian, show tolerance, too, and never take risks; walk in safety and remember that tho assertion of any rights in face of danger is extremely unwise. Do not place unreasoning trust iu the driver or rider of any vehicle. Make sure the way is clear and act smartly and decisively. Your safety depends on what you do yourself to preserve it. “So, too, must cyclists, tho drivers or riders of horses, display tolerance in co-operation with the other units of traffic. “Enjoy touring at leisure. Make unhurried progress, show patience and studied courtesy. “One word to all road users: Whether you walk, ride or drive, remember that if you drink the roadway is no place for you. “Do not have any illusions about road dangers. They are created largely by pedestrians, drivers and riders, and those dangers can be avoided. Make the roads safe by acting safely at all times.”
