Shannon
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. H. J. Fowler (District Traffic Officer) who is well known in Skannou and district, has been an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital for several weeks. Crib Club The bhannon-Mangaoro Crib Club commenced its 1941 season on Tuesday night, when there was a good attendance of players. The winners were Messrs. L Fraser 1, and K. Beech 2. Both secured seven w ins, necessitating a play-off with the above result. Anzac Day Service One of the largest parades seen in Shannon for many years was seen at the Anzac service. The parade assembled at tlie school, and, in charge of Mr. S. Roberts, Commander of the Shannon Homo Guard, marched to the Cenotaph where wreaths were also laid on the South African Memorial. The procession was led by the Palmerston North Silver Band, and comprised members of the Shannon branch of the cxService Women, the R.S.A., the Home Guard, Mayor and Councillors, Girl Guide and Boy Scout troops, and school children. Immediately following thy ; parade, a short service was conducted
by the Rev. E. F. Bush (Presbyterian) in the Renown Theatre. Saturday’s Rugby The following representative rugby fixtures have been arranged for Saturday: Senior.—Shannon v. Foxton at Foxton; Athletic v. Air Force B, at Levin Domain; Wanderers v. Air Force at Weraroa. Junior. —Shannon v. Air Force at Shannon; Foxton v. Athletic at Rugby Park; Wanderers v. Waimeha at Waikanae; Training Centre v. United at Otaki. Third grade.—Shannon v. Kuku-Manakau at Shannon; College A v. Athletic at Rugby Park at 1.30 p.m.; Collego B v. Foxton at Foxton. Thu official opening of the rugby season in the Horowheuua, took place on Saturday last, when standard of play was rather higher, if anything, than on the corresponding day of last year. At Shannon, Air Force A defeated Shannon 39—3, the visitors being superior in every department. Athletic and Wanderers met on the Levin Domain, the latter winning the match by 12 —3. A very closely contested game between Foxton and Air Force B, at Weraroa Station grounds, went in favour of Foxton by 5 points to 3. St. John Ambulance On Monday evening last, members of the Shannon St. John Ambulance were examined in First Aid by Dr. E. T. G. Miller, of Levin, As last year, Mr. J.
T. Bovis represented the. St. John Ambulance Association as supervisor, while Mr. H. Palmer, Ambulance Officer oi the Levin Brigade, was also present. In addition to four members of the Opiki Home Guard unit, Messrs. L. Simpson, A. Simpson, L. Southee and C. •Stannard, those submitting themselves for examination, and in tho caso of several of Iho older members of tho branch, for re-examination, were as fob lows:—Mesdames I. Edmonds and V. Easton; Misses E. Evans, P. Burgess, J. lloldsworth, J. Johnson, E. Olsen, M Young; Messrs. D. Cole, D. Caldwell, T. S. Downes, G. Edmonds, J. Rcisterer, K. Thwaites and »S. Pedersen. First Aid classes will bo suspended for a period now but it is the intention of Miss Evans and Mrs. Edmonds to initiate a I ! Home Nursing class on Monday, May 19. While this is intended, primarily, for the lady members of the branch, there is a possibility of several of the men attending to take instruction in roller-bandaging. The result of Monday night’s examination will not by known for a day or so yet.
