Heme Guard’s Courage in Air Raid
(British Official Wireless.) Received Wednesday, 9.20 p.m. RUGBY, April 29. An outstanding example of sustained courage under air bombardment is that of a Home Guard volunteer, W. T. Whitlock, who has been awarded the George Medal. On the night of October 39 of last year a building received two direct hits from high explosive bombs. Whitlock was on duty and as a result of the explosions he sustained severe injuries to an arm, leg, side and eyes, and Was also injured by the blast, being thrown more than twenty yards over a wall. Nevertheless ho managed to pick him§elf up and ignoring his injuries made his way back to the offices which were wrecked and under the debris of which was his section leader. At great personal risk and almost at the stage of complete collapse, Whitlock managed to extricate his section leader, thus saving bis life. After this Whitlock had to be taken to hospital,
