City Council's Term Ends

TWO COUNCILLORS NOT SEEKING RE-ELECTION Prior to the adjournment of last night’s meeting of the Palmerston North City Council, which marked the end of the three-year term of the present council, the opportunity was taken by the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) to thank councillors for their co-operation and the way in which they had attended to their duties. All councillors had been actuated by a desire to do their best, and it had been a pleasure to preside at meetings. To tho six councillors who were seeking re-election he extended best wishes for their success, and to the two councillors, Crs. W. Mouldey and H. E. Townshend, who were retiring because of ill-health, he tendered the council’s regret at the loss of their services, together with best wishes for a speedy improvement. Cr. Mouldey had been a member of the council for eight years and Cr. Townshend for three years, and they had both given valuable service to the city. Regarding the mayoralty, for which both he and Cr. W. B. Tennent are candidates, Mr. Mansford said he hoped there would be a record poll and that whoever won he hoped the majority would be such as to leave no doubt as to the intentions of the electors. If Cr. Tennent was successful he could count on the wholehearted co-operation of the speaker, just as the speaker was sure that, in the event of his election, he could count on the wholehearted support of Cr. Tennent. Concluding, the mayor thanked the town clerk and heads of departments for their co-operation. On the motion of the mayor, the council placed on record appreciation of the services of Crs. Mouldey and Townshend and extended best wishes for their recovery. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. G. Tremaine) thanked Mr. Mansford for the capable manner in which he had presided at meetings of the council and for the courteous treatment he had given councillors. Councillors and heads of departments were later entertained by the mayor at supper.
