Gort to Command The Rock
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. April 25. The Colonial Office announces the appointment of General Lord Gort to be Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Gibraltar in succession to MajorGeneral G. C. Liddell, who has been appointed Inspector of Training in Britain. Lord Gort was Commander-In-Chief of the B.E.F. in France at the beginning of the war. Nazi Manoeuvres in France , (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, April 25. The French Foreign Minister and Vice-Premier, Admiral Darlan. is reported to have returned to Vichy after a visit to Paris which is believed in London to be in connection with the negotiations fo» closer co-operation between the French and German Governments. No information regarding the visit i» disclosed, but a meeting of the French Cabinet was held on Admiral Darlan’s return. One of the most likely concessions the Nazis might offer is a reduction of the cost of Germany’s occupation of France, and. should this be the case, it is probable that Admiral Darlan will describe such an offer as a further example ot Nazi “generosity”, but the French people will be disinclined to consider the matter in the s,tme light when the daily payment of 406-million francs to Germany is considered. Should any reduction in the daily burden be considered, it will only -be because the Nazis have found that the payment of this sum is beyond France’s capability for the extended period of occupation which the Germans must now contemplate.
