Too Many Holidays

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Allow me to congratulate you on the stinging article you wrote the other day on the above subject. At Easter the banks were closed from Thursday to Tuesday inclusive. Imagine my surprise when I went to the bank this morning and found that they were elosed to-day in celebration of St. George’s Day! The notice on the bank premises also stated that the bank would be closed on Friday—Anzac Day. I think the whole community should observe Anzac Day, but why the banks, during a war period, should inconvenience the whole business community by closing on saints’ days is beyond me. It is high time saints’ holidays were abolished. It is an old English custom which has long since outlived, its usefulness —if it over had any. I am pleased to see that at long last this foolish custom has been tackled by the Chambers of Commerce. I hope public opinion will insist that saints’ holidays be abolished once and, for all.—l am, etC ' CITIZEN
