Patriotic Appeal

MANY FINE RESPONSES By passing its quota of £50,000 to*the £1,000,000 all purposes patriotic appeal, Hawke’s Bay, is one of the first of tho larger districts to achieve its objective. The various zones have raised £51,730 or £1730 in excess of the quota. By means of a queen carnival the Taranaki province has already collected more than £52,000, its quota being £50,000. The Levin-Otaki-Sliannon effort, not yet concluded, is already nearly £2OOO ahead of its quota of £IO,OOO. Even a baby carnival in Raetihi netted a return of nearly £IOOO. In a letter to the headquarters of tho appeal, the secretary of the Shannon committee (Air. J. D. Campbell) shows how remarkable has been the response there. He states: “The quota for Shannon. and district was far too high, on population as well as the class of district.- The £2500 (the quota) was made up as follows: Opiki, £440; Tokoraaru, £560; and Shannon, £ISOO, with a popui lation of 1500. The population of Shanjnon is 950, and it raised £1S00; Tokomaru (250) raised £643; Opiki raised, I think, £6 10s a family. The total raised i was £2905. Added to this, the appeal for material for all our requirements has been met by tho various guilds, even to the inclusion of the Junior Red Cross at the Alangahao power station. Opiki raised £440 by a house-to-house collection; Tokomaru and Shannon by a joint queen carnival. 19
