Manawatu Federation Of Womens Institutes

MRS. T. D. LYNCH, NEW PRESIDENT As a greeting to delegates and members of Women’s Institutes in the Manawatu Federation assembled at , Tiakitahuna yesterday for the annual j council meeting, the hostess institute had beautified the hall with lovely bowls of dahlias, spindle-berry ami autumn foliage. Miss M. Grant presided, associated with her being Mesdames T. D. Lvnch (Linton), C. Easton (Shannon), W. McLelland (Kairanga), D. Scott (Aokautere), W. Churchill, H. V. Caverhill (hon. treasurer) and T. E. Collins (hon. secretary, Rongotea), also Mrs. H. N. McEwen, Tiakitahuna president. Miss Grant reminded the gathering that it was St. George’s Day and asked for prayers for the gallant people of England and the men of the lighting services. Mrs. McEwen offered a cordial welcome to those present, and presented | shoulder sprays to the executive officers, i The welcome was acknowledged by the 'president, who in turn welcomed the delegates on behalf of the executive ' and expressed sympathy with those who had suffered bereavement or were indisposed. Greetings were conveyed from Mrs. W. G. Short, president of j Oroua Federation, and Mrs. A. McCorkindale (Feilding), and regret was expressed in the absence of Mrs. Waring :Taylor (Shannon). j Mrs. Collins presented the annual report (previously published in the “Times”). Moving Its adoption, the president traversed the activities of the j federation and commended the instii tutes on their fine record of patriotic j work. .She thanked the officers and members of institutes for their ready response to every call and added her personal appreciation of the loyal cooperation of the secretary, treasurer and executive. Miss Grant voiced -appreciation of the valuable help given by Miss Hazel Johnson, Sarah Ann Rhodes Fellow, and urged members to make the best use of her services. The speaker urged members to be loyal to . their movement which provided opportunity for every activity they desired, which should include at least elcment- ■ | ary first aid and some form of physical exercises to keep them fit and their , courage high. She also expressed the • hope that some time would b given to drama and singing. Miss Grant spoke s briefly of the work of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary which was co-ordinat- , ing the work for emergency and : organising training. The motion was ■ seconded by Mrs. Lynch, who paid 1 tribute to the work of the president, » ' expressing regret that she had decided retire from the chair. Mrs. McKay - | (Rongotea) offered congratulations to ' the executive on the report and endorsed Mrs. Lynch’s remarks. Mrs. : Caverhill presented the balance-sheet [ j which brought congratulations from ■ | Mrs. Titcombe and appreciation was ' j expressed of the work of Mrs. Guthrie ’ i (Rangiwahia) in distributing the calenj dars, also to Mrs. Caverhill for her ‘ careful watch over the finances. I Members were reminded to let Milson , Institute know of sick members in hospital and appreciation was voiced by several of this service so cheerfully s undertaken. Mr. R. A. Brace was re- , appointed auditor. Mrs. Brungar . (Aokautere president) read the report of their winning effort and received an . institute spoon. Before retiring from r th chair Miss Grant returned thanks - for the many kindnesses received during 3 her seven years in office and asked that : the same loving support be accorded her successor, Mrs. Lynch, the new president thanking the institutes for electing her. A bouquet was presented to Miss Grant. The number of nominations for an executive of nine was considered a sign , of keen interest. Regret was expressed , that Mrs. Brill (Aokautere) had with- ■ drawn her nomination owing to the illr ness of her son. Mesdames Middleton and Russell were appointed scrutineers and the following were elected: Mesdames Collins, Caverhill and Churchill, Miss M. Grant, Mesdames McClelland, i McEwen (Tiakitahuna), A. Poananga > (Palmerston North), Rowlands (Long- * burn) and D. Scott. The following institutes answered the roll: Aokautere, Ashhurst, Bunnythorpe, Carnarvon, Foxton, Glen Oroua, Kawhata, Kairanga, Koputaroa, Kopane, Kelvin Grove, Linton, Longburn, Milson, Oroua Downs, Opiki, Rongotea, , Rangiotu, Shannon, Tokomaru, To Ara- , kura, Tiakitahuna, Tiritea and Whaka* ’ rongo. ' Newbury sent an apology. , A picnic lunch in the hall made a welcome break in proceedings. Delightful entertainment arranged by Miss M. t Rowlands was provided by Miriam and Valerie Rowlands, Helen and Shirley McEwen, who sang Maori part songs, unaccompanied, and later bj r Mrs. Fell
