Women’s Institutes

* KANGXWAHIA The April meeting was particularly interesting. Being the first meeting of the new year members seemed determined to show- enthusiasm. Apologies were received from the president, Airs. Billinghurst, and members expressed pleasure on hearing she was home and convalescent. Airs. C. Smith, vice-president, occupied the chair and welcomed a new member and numerous visitors. The newly elected secretary, Airs. AlacAlillan, read correspondence and Airs. J. Fraser read the Dominion President's letter. A committee was formed to make arrangements for the forthcoming birthday meeting on Alay 13 and the dance to honour the birthday and welcome local territorials back from camp on May 21. The Golden Thread for the year is to be “N.Z. Poets and Authors ’ ’ and Airs. Guthrie started the thread by giving a resume of the life and -works of “Thomas Bracken.” llis poem, “Not Understood,” being given as a finish to the talk. Edith Howes is the subject for next month and will be taken by Airs. C. Smith. Airs. D. Couper and Airs. H. Fankhauser were appointed delegates to the annual meeting of Oroua Federation in Feilding. Mrs. Smitr then introduced Airs. AlcEwen, of Shanghai, to the members and this lady gave a most delightful talk on “Life as we know it in Shanghai.” This talk proved all too short and at its conclusion Airs. D. Alar tin thanked ’Airs. AlcEwen and expressed the members’ pleasure and interest in having her at their meeting. The competitions, a bow r l of berries, and a knitted singlet to be donated patriotically, were judged by Alesdames AlcEwen and Heise and resulted:—Airs. McMillan 1. Airs. Guthrie 2, Airs. Jenkins 3; Airs. Evans 1, Aliss McKenzie 2, and Airs. J. Fraser 3. MAKOAIAKO There was a small attendance at the April meeting. Members were reminded of the Bush District Federation when j this institute assists in providing for afternoon tea. A discussion took place regarding the production of a play during the winter months. The Alay social afternoon was also brought to the notice of members. A tribute of appreciation to the late president, Airs. W. G. Eising, w-as paid and she was presented with a dainty posy. Afternoon tea was served by the hostess, Airs. Eising, who had also provided prety I vases of flowers for the tables. The motto for the day was “May we never |be too busy to help a friend.” The roll call, “A First Aid Hint” was well 'responded to. All hands turned to packing parcels for patriotic fund and local lads overseas seven in all being prepared. Competitions resulted:—Vegetable mould, Airs. Eising L Aliss Sargent 2. Airs. Hoggard 3; best bloom, Airs. Elwin and Airs. Eddie equal 1, Airs. Day 2, Airs. Elwin 3. TIRITEA The monthly meeting was held on April 5, when there was a good attendance to celebrate the Institute birthday. Two or three competitions were held and items were given by Cecily Pinfold (dancing) and Brian Pinfold (pianoforte). The birthday cake was made and donated by Mrs. Pinfold. A bandaging demonstration w r as given by Airs. Shere. All were sorry to lose the president, Airs. Hill, who has moved to another district. An afternoon was given in her honour at the residence of: Airs. Edynean, when sho was presented \ with an ornament. In replying, Airs. Hill expressed her regret at leaving saying she had always enjoyed the friendly spirit which prevailed in the monthly meeting. Airs. Pinfold was unanimously elected president and Airs. Shore vice-president. Airs. Alilner and Airs. Elliott were elected to attend as delegates, the Alanawatu Federation Council meetings. The scone competition was won by Airs. Alilner, Mesdames Edynean and Elliott coming second and third respectively. The competition for the best bloom was won by Mrs. Crowe. Members were reminded that the competition for Alav is a posy, also please come prepared to state how much wool needed for the baby’s knitted garment competition for June. NGAWAPURUA Airs. Coulter presided over the April meeting of the Ngawapurua Women’s Institute. There was quite a large attendance, Airs. AlcPeak being enrolled as a new member. Several articles which had been made by members for the refugees were on view, and Mrs. Coulter also reminded members to

prepare for the future packing of soldiers’ parcels. Airs. 11. P. Horne, executive chairman of the W.W.S.A., was then introduced, and after briefly outlining aims and objects of the W.W.S.A., called upon tier conveners, Mrs. Leach (canteen), Airs. AlcCormiek (transport), and Airs. Jamieson (home services), each explaining her duties. Mrs; Knapp was elected representative of the W.W.S.A. for Ngawapurua. The competitions for the mouth resulted: Madeira cake, Mrs. J. Olsson 1, Mrs. N. Kopke 2, Airs. Coulter 3; best article from a pine cone, Airs. Coulter I, Airs. Kopke 2, Airs. Waltlier 3; best jar of flowers, Mrs. Waugh 1, Miss Waugh 2; best bloom, Aliss C. Knapp 1, Airs. Cyril Morgan 2. Mr. Wood, of Dannevirke, gave a very interesting demonstration, showing the uses of various parts of a Singer sewing machine. The hostesses, Alesdames Wade, O’Niel, AlcPeak aud Aliss Aplin served a dainty afternoon tea at the conclusion of an enjoyable afternoon.
