Eels for Maori Battalion Seven cases of c&ofced and cured eels i have arrived at the National Patriotic Fund Board’s goods stores in Welling- • ton from the Arowhenua Maori Run- • anga, Temuka. They are for the Maori Battalion overseas. In a letter to the board, Mr. Tan\aoi H. I’aiki, chairman of the runanga, stated that the whole work, from the catching of the cels and the job of preservation to the packing, involved a considerable amount of community effort on the part of his people, who had been enthusiastically eager to assist in the war effort and to provide some Maori foods for their kinsmen overseas. He added that he was sure that the fish could be shipped anywhere, even through the tropics. According to the letter the consignment comprises approximately 2000 properly cooked and cured (sun-dried) eels. Already the board has sent special delicacies to the Maori troops overseas, and these have 'arrived in good order. They have included mutton birds, also dried crayfish received .from Maoris on the east coast of the North Island.
