Blood Transfusion Service

BRANCH BOR DANNEVIRKE The endeavour to establish in Danncvirke a branch of the National Blood Transfusion Service was carried a stage further last Thursday evening, when 20 volunteer donors attended at the public hospital for tho testing and grouping of their blood. Tho grouping tests were conducted by Dr. Thos. Pullar, of tho Palmerston North Hospital. The grouping of prospective donors resulted as follows, the new international nomenclature of blood groups being shown in parentheses:— Group 1 (AB), 1 donor; group 2 (A), 12 donors; group 3 (B), 3 donors; group 4 (O), 4 donors. In connection with the foregoing grouping, it is interesting to note that persons in group 1 (AB) are universal recipients, but are rarely donors, whereas persons in group 4 (O) are universal donors whoso services may be frequently needed. Those in groups 1 (AB), 2 (A) and 3 (B) are required for transfusions only to patients whoso own blood is classified in those groups respectively, excepting in the case of group 1 (B), the universal recipients, who can take any other blood without reaction. As a result of. tho endeavours thus far, we have in Danucvirke a branch of this very necessary service, but, as the sorvico Of more donors in tho class 4 (0), tho universal donors group, may be required, particularly in time of crisis or emergency, it is anticipated that further volunteers will enrol for grouping purposes.
