Bookmaking Alleged Against Hospital Orderly PATIENT SUFFERING FROM
CEREBRAL HAEMORRHAGE Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 7. An allegation of bookmaking by an orderly at the Auckland Hospital who was alleged to have obtained nearly £SO from a patient suffering from cerebral haemorrhage was brought before the Hospital Board in a report from the board’s complaints committee. e The committee had considered a rer port from the acting medical superintendent (Mr. H. L. Gould) who stated 1 that the sister in charge of one of the v wards had received a letter from a rcla- * tive of the patient. The writer stated D that an examination of the patient’s i ° cheque book showed that four cheques j r amounting to just under £SO had been < drawn in favour of the named person and it was Suspected that they related 1 to bookmaking transactions. Dr. Gould j commented that the charge involved a I patient suffering from cerebral haemorrhage and possibly not competent to e transact business of any kind. The committee reported that it had 3 interviewed the orderly concerned who * had admitted having received cheques ,r from the patient for the purpose of - 1 placing bets on horse races. He stated 8 that he had placed bets with a bookmaker but would not disclose the lat- ' ter’s name. He had been suspended and 3 the committee recommended that lie be dismissed from the r-oard’s service. The report was adopted.
