Racing at Awapuni To-day
Wanganui Cup Meeting
FIRST DAY FIELDS ARE EXCELLENT The Wanganui Jockey Club’s ( autumn meeting opens at Awapuni . to-day and it will bo concluded on Saturday. The principal event on to-day’s card is the Wanganui Cup and for the first time in its long j history, extending back to 1875, this race i 3 being decided on a course other than Wanganui. The first race is timed to start at noon ( and the betting will bo single-pool. The Cup race is due to start at g 2.45 p.m. and for it there are a dozen acceptors. The quality of the field is ] indicated by the fact that Votium, winner of the Paul Memorial Handicap £ over q, mile and a quarter on the second day of the recent Taranaki meeting is r only 51bs. above the minimum. Gladney has pride of place with 8.12 and I his recent racing should have brought him up to conceit pitch. Gladnev and Colonel Bogey failed at Hastings but the Colonel Avon both handicaps at the Manawatu autumn meeting two weeks ago. Belle Cane Avas third in the Awa- < puni Gold Cup and it will be remember- ] cd she Avon the Manawatu Cup at the Christmas meeting. Little Robin beat * all but Rakanui in the Hawke’s Bay jCup and he is likely to be a better horse to-day. Gay Fox is ahvays Avorthy of j respect and so is Dynasty, Avhose fourth ; in the Tamatete Handicap suggests a ; quick return to form. Mittie and Hunting Cat are liable to upset calculations and the same can bo said of Ruatiti. Notium is another possibility and there is a very good chance that Bold {Step ; and Gold Bridge Avill not be very far away when the acid test- is being applied. The field is as ev<en as it can be and betting should take a very Avide range. The best fancied runners might include Little Robin, Dynasty, Colonel Bogey and Bold Step. The sixth and eighth races on today’s programme arc for open class horses over sprint distances. The six furlong race is the Flying Handicap Avhicli has drawn a field of nine, including Night Eruption and Hui, wiliners at Hastings, and Tuatara, winner on the first day of the recent ManaAvatu meeting. The top weight is Royal Star 11. but it is suggested he is a doubtful starter. Next is Globe Trotter and reports from Wanganui indicate ho is near his best. Zest has a ton of speed and she was a winner at Taranaki. Black Robe Avas second to Tuatara at Mauawatu. Endorsement and Harina make up the field and the favourites might be Night Eruption, Zest, Tuatara and Black Robe. The course proper with. the trestles 30 feet out was available, providing capital galloping r ground. 1 Most attractive performances were 4 the efforts of Surveyor-General, Air Flight, Miss Phaieroii and High Tone. Notium (N. Holland) alone covered a £ mile in lmin. 49scc., his last six fur(i longs taking lmin. 3 9Jsec. Notium 8 finished strongly and is not Avithout . prospects in the Wanganui Cup on ’ Thursday. J. Williamson is to ride Notium. 2 Royal Star II (W. Thomson) galloped five furlongs in lmin. sscc. without disfi playing any dash in his Avork, and may 9 l,e considered an unlikely starter on 4 Thursday. 3 Miss Phaleron (J. Graham) and High 0 Tone (N. Holland; had a good set-to over half a mile, being together the 6 best part of the way, and they finished 8 with little between them at the end in 50 4-ssec. Surveyor-General (D. Ryan) went attractively over four furlongs down the back to register 50*scc., slowing up over another furlong to record lmin. 4 , 2-ssec. for five. Surveyor-General is in great, heart, but may not fulfil his first day’s engagement at Awapuni. He may be taken down on Saturday, and if so will be accompanied by Ring Chief.
