Poaching of Native Pigeons
War conditions seem to be increasing the facilities for the poaching of native pigeons in forests on the West Coast of the South Island, and other districts, according to information received by the Forest and Bird Protection Society. During a recent trip in that district, Mrs. Knox Gilmer, of Wellington, saw from a service car only one jngeon in localities where many beautiful birds might have been noticed not long ago. Mrs. Knox Gilmer mentioned this matter to the driver and also stated that pigeons were protected by law. The man laughed, and evidently had an impression that the visitor was not qtiito up-to-date about the poaching practices of the coast. The Society has good reason to believe that there is a constant raiding of woodlands for native pigeons.
